Former Faculty

Since the founding of the Qatar campus of Carnegie Mellon University, a number of great individuals have contributed their knowledge and their experience to the growth of the Computer Science program. Our program owes a lot to the people below, many of which are faculty members in the School of Computer Science in our main campus in Pittsburgh, who spent one or more semesters bootrapping the Doha campus. Others heel from other prestigious universities and elected to spend a sabbatical year or two with us, thereby adding diversity to our offerings. Others yet moved on to even greater enterprises after making a lasting contributions to our program.

    Ananda Gunawardena

    Ananda Gunawardena is a Computer Science faculty member at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh. Over the years, he spent two semesters at CMU-Qatar teaching introductory classes. His main research interests are in data mining and human-computer interaction and their application to creating intelligent learning systems.

    Bernardine Dias

    M. Bernardine Dias is an assistant research professor at the Robotics Institute at Carnegie Mellon University. Her primary affiliations are with the Field Robotics Center at the Pittsburgh campus and the Computer Science department in the Doha campus where she leads several research projects and teaches at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Dr. Dias earned her B.A. from Hamilton College, Clinton NY, with a dual concentration in Physics and Computer Science and a minor in Women's Studies in 1998, followed by a M.S. (2000) and Ph.D. (2004) in Robotics from Carnegie Mellon University.

    Brett Browning

    Brett Browning is a Senior Systems Scientist in the Robotics Institute at Carnegie Mellon University. He has a split assignment with the Computer Science Department at Carnegie Mellon's Qatar branch campus, since 2005. He is also affiliated with the National Robotics Engineering Center (NREC), a semi-autonomous unit of the Robotics Institute with a focus on commercializing robotics technology. He co-directs the Qri8 robotics lab, and leads a number of basic to applied research programs in Qatar and in Pittsburgh. His research interests focus on Computer Vision, autonomy and machine learning applied to mobile robot problems. Additionally, he has a deep interest in developing robots to be deployed to Oil and Gas operations to improve safety and productivity.

    Chuck Thorpe

    Chuck Thorpe is the founding Dean of Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar, a position he served from 2004 to 2010. Although not technically a faculty member, he found time to teach courses in robotics and other CS subjects, to supervise research, and to get involved with students. He was the director of the Robotics Institute at Carnegie Mellon Pittsburgh from 2000 to 2004, and was a faculty member there since 1984.

    Jacobo Carrasquel

    Jacobo Carrasquel, is a Computer Science faculty member at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh. He was the very first CS faculty to teach in the Qatar campus, where he taught introductory programming classes in 2004 and 2005 before resuming his duties in Pittsburgh.

    Joseph Mertz is an Associate Teaching Professor in the H. John Heinz III College and in the undergraduate Information Systems Program in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences. Over the years, he spent two semesters at CMU-Qatar, teaching courses on technology for developing communities and supervising student projects on this topic.

    Nael Abu-Ghazaleh

    Nael Abu-Ghazaleh received his MS and PhD degrees in Computer Engineering from the University of Cincinnati in 1994 and 1997 respectively. He has a BSc in Electrical Engineering from the University of Jordan. His research interests are in mobile computing and networking, sensor networks, parallel and distributed systems and high performance computing.
